Our Social Action & Justice Committee works hard to create and sustain a more just and equitable world. Committee efforts begin with studying an issue, which may lead to advocacy by working with grassroots community organizations, government, interfaith, and community groups. The Social Action & Justice Committee provides a focal point for these efforts. Individuals take the lead on specific social justice issues. Examples of these issues include:
Economic Equality
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning Justice
Immigrant Rights
Racial Justice
Environmental Justice
Voting Rights
UUCR is actively involved in social action work throughout our community, with representatives on the boards of Cornerstones, a local non-profit that provides support and advocacy to those in need, and The Closet, a local faith-based non-profit thrift shop. We also organize or support the following initiatives:
UUCR Alternative Gift Market
Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund
Helping Hungry Kids
Hypothermia Prevention
Monthly special collections to benefit various charities and humanitarian groups

Special Collection for May: Beacon House
Founded by a Unitarian Universalist minister, Beacon House helps to bridge the academic achievements gap and disrupt the cycle of poverty, by providing after school educational programs and youth development activities in Washington DC’s Ward 5.
It is particularly known for its Athletics Program, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The Program has evolved into a national championship winning multi-sport program, which serves as a powerful catalyst for youth development, and an exemplary youth engagement and community-building model. Its success is reflected in the scores of Athletics Program alumni who have attended college and become successful adults. For more information click here.
